sis pecked gunman in a -- suspected gunman in a marine bar rack shooting is from the bay area. she graduated from liberty high in brentwood. her friends say she dreamt of joining the marines and serving her country. >> we were talking about her wanting to come over and i wanted to see her. i wanted her to see my baby. the last time she saw him was when he turned one. i just missed her a lot. and we talk through facebook. i barely got messages to her phone because she was always working. >> friends speculated the shooting may have resulted from a lovers triangle. castromata was a warehouse clerk who joined the corp in

2011. his great grandfather who is also named lopez they contacted the family they said they were investigating more and would let us know. police are investigating the fatal over night accident after a man was hit on 580. the chp says it's still an active investigation at this point the appears the man got out of a stopped car and ran across the lane. the driver tried to avoid the man but ended up hitting him. the man died at the scene. the driver is cooperating with police. police are searching for the driver who hit and killed a bicyclist over night. that happened in an industrial area. officers say the young man was struck while riding his bike

near 28th street. the driver fled and the victim died at the scene. san francisco police arrested 11 people on charges of vandalism. they caught the group scrawling graffiti on a building on lankton street. they recovered several bags of evidence near the scene. officers had the suspects sitting up a wall in handcuffs before they were escorted into police cars. all of them are facing felony charges. happening now. thousands of runners are getting ready for a big race. it'sth fourth annual oakland running festival. alex savidge is live at the starting line for us with all the prep and alex it looks like it's getting busy. >> reporter: yeah things are getting busy. more than 9,000 runners will be taking part in all four of the races excuse me five races. this is the starting line and also the finish line. this is where they will be

taking off right near snow park. you can see a lot of runners are down here. they are all geared up and ready to go. i want to show you the course route. the runners will leave here in downtown. they will go through rock ridge neighborhood and head up to the oakland hills down to the fruitvale district and go to west oakland they will go along lake merit before they finish here. i between bring you the executive director. lee, thank you for joining us. you have a good crowd out here and a great day for a race. >> yeah we do. last year we suffered with a little bad weather. the weather gods have blessed us here. >> reporter: you have five races right? >> yes five. >> reporter: we have the full the half the 5k. >> we have the hawaiian airlines relay and the lucky kidsly relay. >> reporter: this is the fourth

year. you are growing with your numbers. you have a positive outlook where things are going. >> we are very, very mazed with what happened. our fourth year we will have 9500 total runners. we've been on a 15% yearly increase and that is great numbers and the support we have gotten from the running community has been terrific. >> reporter: what does this do for oakland's economy? >> last year the economic impact was about $4 million. we expect it to be a little bit more this year. and also there is always the charity piece. number of charities are involved once again. we expect the race probably in the neighborhood of $400,000 for charity. >> reporter: you've got people coming here taking part in this race from all over the down from industry and the united states. the full marathon is the first race that will kick off here. that will happen a half hour from now at 7:30. we'll be here for that. for now we are live in oakland alex savidge ktvu channel 2 news. >> thanks. we do have more information

about the race on our website just two to ktvu.com and click on hot topics. secretary of state john kerry makes a surprise trip to baghdad. kerry has been meeting with the leaders with other middle eastern nations. earlier he traveled to saudi arabia and egypt. last week he accompanied president obama to egypt. this is kerry's first trip to iraq after becoming secretary of state. pope francis celebrated his first palm sunday mass in st. peters square. he road in a modified pope mobile. there was no class casing protecting him. 250,000 people gathered for the mass. the pope urged them to be humble and young at heart.

pass overhead. and this morning i'm actually seeing a little bit of fog. half-moon bay visibility down to about five miles here. it's a little tough to see but the lighter shade of gray is just inside the bay. we will continue with the high clouds like we saw yesterday and temperatures rebounding to very similar numbers from what we saw yesterday as well. 37 in napa right now. 39 in santa rosa. napa also reporting fog this morning. 40-degrees in walnut creek. temperatures up by a few degrees. around the bay area starting off similar to how we woke up yesterday morning. 41 palo alto. 45 outside your door in belmont. and again that little bit of patchy fog there. the on shore breeze will make its way back later this afternoon into the early evening hours. for the time being we continue with this northerly flow. you can see a close up view of the satellite and radar. the high clouds that continue to sweep across the area.

this will be the case for today. the ridge of high pressure still in control of our weather pattern. it will shift right over the west coast and we'll remain here for today. as i back this up a little bit farther this system here will be what will plow into the ridge. this system will ride over it. it's not going to bring us any rain but it will cool us down. it will strengthen our on shore breeze. and tuesday night into wednesday perhaps a little bit of rain. so today 70-degrees expected for santa rosa. 67 for berkeley. low 60s in san francisco. upper 60s in oakland. low 70s for antioch. 69 for san jose. 71 for morgan hill. upper 60s for mountain view. just a nice pleasant afternoon in store. as we get into monday a subtle cool down. bigger change will come tuesday into wednesday. the chance for rain will arrive late tuesday. we'll leave it off the icon now. better chance will come wednesday. thursday and the models are

shaping up for possibly a wet easter weekend. at least the first half of that weekend. i'll show you the future cast model and what you can expect coming up. >> thanks. it is official spring break is officially in full year for schools across the bay area. since many students won't be heading to class, muni announced it will reduce some of its services during the morning and evening commute. people are being told to check the schedule ahead of time. meanwhile many college students are off to hot spring break destinations like mexico and florida. and as they do, they are being urged by police to use caution after several spring break related deaths being reported in mexico. stranded drivers and dangerous roads as more snow hits the midwest and it is not done yet. how much more is expected to fall and how it could effect air travel. and major traffic changes coming this week to bay area drivers. what is happening this week in devils slide and the golden

welcome back on this sunday morning. a live look over san francisco. patchy fog has returned to the bay area this morning. a delightful afternoon in store. more snow is expected to fall today across parts of colorado and the midwest. that storm caused a headache for travelers both in the air and on the road. this weekend the red cross had to help drivers that got stranded in colorado.

the storm dumped more than a foot of snow in some places. kansas city is expected to get the brunt of that storm today and then that storm will head over to the east coast and it's expected to hit new york by tomorrow. and if you have a flight scheduled to denver, kansas, or nebraska you might want to check the status of that flight. hundreds of flights were canceled yesterday because of that storm. big delays and more cancellations are expected today. flood waters reached the tops of car tires in alabama. heavy rainstorms watered that area this weekend. there was rain, thunder, and hail. severe flooding. but forecasters say the storms are moving out of that area. a memorial service is being held to remember a santa rosa teenager killed in tragic racing accident last weekend. 14-year-old marcus johnson was struck and killed by a race car at marysville raceway. johnson's cousin was driving the car when he lost control and crashed into the pit area.

the accident also killed 68- year-old dale wonderjim. hundreds of people are expected to attend a memorial service to remember his life. investigators say they are still looking into that exact cause of the crash. highway patrol is investigating a deadly head on crash in sunol involving three vehicles. it happened yesterday morning on highway 84. chp says the driver of a dodge a 46-year-old man from hayward drifted into an on coming lane hitting another vehicle. he died on the scene. four other people in the two other cars were injured. the accident closed the highway for two hours. chp is cracking down on reckless motorcycles and bike riders. highway patrol officers say gone up. they will target motorcyclists breaking traffic laws on the sunday morning ride. they will also look for bicyclists who don't stop at stop signs or let drivers pass.

this upcoming week holds two major traffic changes for bay area commuters. first one is on the peninsula. after seven years and if more than $400 million a project helped to protect san mateo drivers is almost open to traffic. tomorrow people plan to father at devils slide to celebrate two new tunnels between pacifica and month terra that will let drivers bypass an area that is known for mud and rock slides and on tuesday it will open to the public. it's the first highway tunnel bill in california for more than 50 years. the other big thing this week is that right there. that is the golden gate bridge. for drivers this means four new ways of paying the tolls. the first and the easiest option is fast track. there is also pay as you go. that option requires you to set up an account with your license plate and credit card numbers.

the third option is to make a one-time payment before crossing the bridge. they have kiosks set up for that. and you can get an invoice mailed to you. once the converse goes into effect do not stop at the toll booths. 28 toll takers will lose their jobs. all but nine of those workers have been reassigned to other positions in the district or chosen to retire. new this morning a new concern overseas. the former president of pakistan ended his 4.5 year self-imposed exile. he flew from dew dew buy back to pakistan. on monday the u.s. will

formerly transfer of control to the controversial prison to an afghan prison. it's one of the largest american military bases in afghanistan. the prison houses more than 3,000 insurgents and other inmates. the deal includes assurances that prisons who poise a danger will will continue to be detained under afghan law. a guided missile -- the secretary of defense ordered the cuts for the san diego based uss rents. the office also says the uss batch which will cut its current deployment short it will return to san diego next month. the navies blue angels will perform their last show in key west, florida. the navy has only canceled performances in april because of sequester cuts. the air force thunder birds have canceled all performances through september.

deputies are working to determine what went wrong during a sky diving jump. a sky diving instructor and his student died yesterday. they were among 22 people who went up for a jump. when only 20 returned the search for the two missing men started. search and rescues can dogs started this training exercise. the dogs went in search of pretend plane crash vehicles with fake blood. the point was to train volunteers for a real life emergency. >> the dog handlers, their crews would come out and locate the casualties and provide treatment and ultimately evacuation. >> organizers with the california search and rescue dog association say they don't

usually see it. on tuesday night the sacramento city council will throw up a last minute shot to keep the kings in the area. it would be the largest redevelopment project in sacramento history with up to 1.5 square feet of offices. the city would pay $258 million with most of the money coming from the sale of bonds supported by park and revenues. >> that is part of revitalizing our downtown. that is part of completing the rest of k street. that is part of adding additional businesses to old sacramento. the heart of our city. >> investment group consists of a billionaire. the council must approve the deal in order for the city to present the proposal to the nba next week. the league is scheduled to vote on april 18th. the deal that would relocate

second half but then rallied back to win. they shot 50% from the field and beat the number one seed 76- 70. the shockers move into the round of 16. congratulations to them. >> bummer for me. no cal. no ucla. looks like we will have to go outside. maybe go for a run because the weather looks perfect for that. it will be another gorgeous day for the oakland running festival this morning. it's a chilly start. runners like it chilly. it's a clear start in most cases but i'm seeing a little bit of patchy fog just inside the bay and alodge the coast. here from a broader standpoint i am going to show you the high clouds you can see here that will continue to drift into the bay area and out here about 900 miles is a system that is going to bring us cloudy weather for monday, bring back our on shore breeze and begin our cool down. as we get through this morning, that patchy fog going to break up and move out of here by 10:00 or 11:00. by 3:00 in the afternoon it's back along the coastline. there is the first like of a

you are looking live downtown oakland near lake merit at the oakland running festival just getting under way on this sunday morning. good morning, everyone and welcome back to mornings on 2 i'm mike mibach. >> and i'm claudine wong. now that race has been gaining a lot of popularity in the east bay and ktvu alex savidge is live there in oakland. about to get run over by all the racers getting ready to get the marathon under way. hey alex. >> reporter: yeah hopefully they will watch out for us here. good crowd. even excited. the confetti flowing. this is where the oakland running festival just got under way. these folks you are looking at right here they are taking part in the full marathon and obviously they are starting first and they will be heading all throughout the city of oakland this morning. it's a great route they will be taking and going through the downtown area up through the rock ridge area into the oakland hills. they will be going down to west

oakland and then going around lake merit before they make their way back here to downtown. 9,000 runners total will be taking part in five different races here at the oakland running festival today. and they are coming from all over the country. they are coming from all over the world. and really this is running festival and marathon that has been growing over the past few years. this is the fourth year for the oakland running festival. the number of participates has been growing significantly and talking with the executive director they are happy about this. a little while ago i talked to one runner who has taken part in the event before as she talked to me about how this festival shows off the best that oakland has to offer. listen to her. >> it's really fun. i like that it goes through all of downtown and you can check out the historic parts. i'm not originally from the bay area. for me it was a great way to see all of oakland for the first time on the street. >> it was cool.

>> reporter: sot full mare -- so the full marathon runners have taken off. they will be back here. the first people will be finishing up at 10:00. right about 2.5 hours when the first runners make their way back here. what happens after this? there will be a half marathon that kicks off. a 5k run and a relay run. we'll be here covering all of it here this morning. live in downtown oakland alex savidge ktvu news. there was a wild chase along the peninsula last night. there it goes. it was around 1:00 this morning. san mateo police say they started tracking what they believe was a stolen vehicle. witnesses say the pursuit on 101 reached speeds about 100 miles an hour. officers chased the driver into san francisco while they lost him on the ground chp officer tailed him in the air.

that driver later stopped the car and started running. officers caught the man but have not confirmed they had the suspect they were looking for. >> four people and a dog are rescued by the coast guard. a coast guard rescue boat wasn't able to get close because of the shallow water there so instead everyone on that stranded boat was hoisted into a helicopter and flown to san carlos. fairfield police are investigating a tragic accident. a seven-year-old boy drowned in a family friends backyard pool. emergency responders rushed to a home on howe court yesterday morning. they found the boy floating in the pool. paramedics were not able to revive the child. man trying to defend his mother-in-law in a robbery was shot and killed. it began when two thieves approached the woman when she unloaded her car on friday

night. officers say when the woman'sson came out of the house to help one -- woman's son-in-law came out to help they shot and killed him right in the driveway. >> they shot this person in cold blood and for no reason. it's sad. the crazy world we live in. >> the victim was 33 years old. he lived in alameda. the gunman drove off in a dark coever alreadied receive -- dark colored sedan. we there is new information in a nightclub. the san francisco entertainment commission has shut down the 330 rich club. a gunman opened fire both inside and outside of the club. three people were wounded. two men in their 20s and a man in his 30s remains in the hospital in critical but stable

condition. oakland police are using new tactics for a crime crack down that they say is boricking well. oakland mayor jean quan have announced homicides have dropped by 45% and shootings dropped by nearly 30%. the chief says that stems from this raid three weeks ago where federal agents targeted the east oakland case gang and arrested 16 people. he also credits the community and its clergy. >> one strength that we have is they understand what it takes to police this city and know we can't do it alone. >> what is really important is law enforcement is not standing alone. >> reverend george cummings joins the police. on top of that 38 new police officers have just joined the force. part of the first police academy graduation in four years. sheriffs deputies took more than 600 firearms off the street. a gun buy back event was held

yesterday in san jose. deputies say they collected 584 handguns and 17 assault rifles. they ended up paying people close to $62,000 for those weapons. this was the county's second gun buy back event this month. new gun control ads from a group of mayors is airing in key states. >> i owned a gun all my life. i will fight for my right to keep it. background checks have nothing to do with taking guns away from anyone. >> this is from new york city mayor michael bloomberg. it supports comprehensive background checks. the new ads will air in 13 states believed to be divided on gun control. it will not air in california. on tuesday the u.s. supreme court considers the issue of gay marriage. a handful of people already camping outside that court hoping to witness the two historic legal cases. one involves a berkeley couple

another round of chilly temperatures out there this morning. and a live look there you can see patchy fog has returned to parts of the bay area and along the coastline. a weaker northerly breeze and a bit of an on shore breeze here as brought back some of this. we are seeing it just inside the bay. i'm seeing it along the coastline. as i put into motion for you. mostly sunny skies for today. high clouds continuing over the bay area. by the afternoon, those low clouds are making a come back. at least along the coastline. so a transition beginning as early as this evening. let's talk about the numbers outside your door. if you're out for a morning run maybe to get a cup of coffee. 37-degrees in napa. 37 santa rosa. fairfield you are in a couple degrees of freezing. 48 in oakland. 46 mountain view. 44 san jose. some of us just about where we were yesterday morning. a few of us slightly warmer. here's your satellite radar. there are the high clouds.

unsettled weather wednesday and thursday. not a lot of rain expected but that chance for showers will remain and it could take us all the way into easter weekend. back to the desk. officials in napa are taking another shot at getting millions of dollars in federal funds to help control flooding in central napa. local flood control requested $23 million last year but failed. the money would be used to build a bypass that would carry 50% of river flows in the region. officials say funding will be hard to come by especially with so many cuts at the nation's capitol. your time now 7:41. residents of san francisco's bay view neighborhood saute are taking a major home improvement change of course to job promises they say were never kept. it's happening again. another sink hole is forming in a florida neighborhood less than two miles away. the one that killed a man in his home. but first let's take you outside. that is a gorgeous shot of the golden gate bridge. remember major changes coming to that bridge. it should speed things up.

they will take off. the marathon already took off. there they go. on their way for a a measly 13 miles. the marathon has gotten under way. there are races taking place today. over 9,000 people are expected to participate. the race will effect traffic throughout that area so you've got to be aware of that. major street closures include broadway, telegraph avenue, 19 street, bus services are also going to be delayed and detoured around that route. all those runners pound the pavement in oakland for this fourth annual running festival. another sink hole has been found in florida not far from the one that opened up and killed a man last month. the new sink hole is eight feet wide and ten feet deep. some children in the neighborhood discovered it yesterday afternoon. two homes have been evacuated as a precaution. those that live nearby worry there could be even more.

check out this video. this happened in los angeles. a homeowner there got a big surprise when that car landed on its roof. the man's neighbor lost control of its car when driving down a steep driveway and landed on top of the roof. while you might thiolic at this and think it would be tough to do. neighbors say this is the second time the elderly driver has crashed into a neighboring home. it has been two years since the 9.2 earthquake and tsunami has hit. organizers are planning a cleanup effort in alameda county. this is video of the beach soon after the earthquake struck back in 2011. about 1.5 million tons of debris was washed into the pacific ocean in that disaster. volunteers will take notes of what is collected and put the

today. i'll show you that future cast model and when he expects the rain to arrive. san francisco police arrested 11 people on charges of vandalism. police say they caught the group scrawling graffiti on a building on -- they recovered several bags of evidence from the scene including a large sharpy and backpacks full of spray paint. officers have the suspects sitting up against that wall. there you see them in handcuffs before they were escorted in police cars. police are also in facing a -- investigating a fatal accident over night. it happened just before 12:30 near the off ramp. the chp says it's still an active investigation but at this point it appears the man got out of a stopped car and then ran across the lanes. the driver of a van tried to avoid that man. braked hard but ended up hitting him and the man died add the-- at the scene.

oakland police are searching for the driver that hit and killed a bicyclist over night. that happened in an industrial area of west oakland around 10:20 last night. the young man was struck while riding his bike on 28th. the driver fled and the victim died at the scene. officers are are hoping debris will help lead them to the suspects vehicle. memorial service is being held to remember a santa rosa teenager killed in a tragic racing accident last weekend. 14-year-old marcus johnson was struck and killed by a race car last saturday at the maryville raceway. johnson's cousin was driving the car when he lost control. crashing into the pit area and hitting the 14-year-old. the accident also killed 68- year-old dale. hundreds of people are expected to attend a memorial service today to honor his life. it will take place at 2:00 this afternoon. investigators saute are still looking into the cause of the crash. we have new information on

the deadly shooting at a marine base in virginia. the suspected gunman and one of the victims were from the bay area. military says 25-year-old sergeant qusay owe lopez shot and killed fellow marines and then himself. she graduated from liberty high in brentwood. her friends say she dreamt of joining the marines and serving her country. >> we were talking about her wanting to come over and i wanted to her to see my baby. and i just missed her a lot. and we were just talking through facebook and then i barely got to -- she was always working. >> friends speculated the shootings may have resulted from a lovers triangle. castromata was a warehouse

future by better preparing them for it. the fbi is working with east bay police to track down a serial bank robber. the suspect is being called the button down bandit. on march 12th he robbed a wells fargo in pleasanton and robbed a chase bank in walnut creek. he's known to wear a gray button down dress shirt and dress black shoes. there is new information about the shooting at a san francisco nightclub we first told you about right here. the san francisco entertainment commission shut down the 330 rich club for the entire weekend. witnesses say an argument broke out just before 1:30 saturday morning at the accomplishment. a gunman opened fire both inside and outside of the club. three people were wounded. two men in their 20s and a man in his 30s remains in the hospital in critical condition.

year-old. hundreds of people are expected to attend a memorial service today to honor his life. it is scheduled to begin at 2:00 at the santa rosa bible church located on badger road. investigators say they are still looking into the exact cause of that crash. police are investigating a fatal overnight accident after a man was hit and killed on interstate 580 in san leandro. it happened just before 12:30. chp says it is still an active investigation butt appears that a man got out of a stopped car and ran across the lanes. the driver of a transit van tried to avoid the man and braked hard but ended up hitting him. officers say the driver is cooperating. police are searching for the driver who hit and killed a bicyclist overnight in an industrial area of west oakland. officers say the young man was struck while riding his bike on peralta street near 28th. the driver fled.

determine what went wrong during a sky diving jump in south florida. according to investigators, a sky diving instructor and his student died yesterday. they were among a group of 22 people that went up for a jump when only 20 sky divers returned a search for the missing two men began. >> it's really sad. it had to be a pretty horrible sky dive. something terribly went wrong. tragic day for a bunch of friends over here having a vacation and a good time. >> their bodies were found about nine hours later. two men were visiting the area from iceland. a couple hundred military vets in las vegas paid tribute to the marines killed in a training exercise last week. none of the veterans actually knew the seven marines who died but the vets say they must still honor their brothers in arms. the memorial included american flags accompanying the pictures of the seven marines. they were killed last monday when a mortar round exploded during a training exercise at a

formally transfer control of a controversial prison near the bagram airfield in afghanistan. the prison houses more than 3,000 insurgents and other inmates. the deal includes assurances that prisoners who pose a danger to coalition forces will continue to be detained under afghan law. the u.s. navy says the deployments of a guided missile vessel and submarine have been canceled because of the nation's spending cuts. the secretary of defense ordered the cuts for the san diego-based u.s.s. rence. the navy's blue angels will perform their last show for awhile today in key west, florida. so far the navy has only canceled performances in april due to the sequester cuts. it is hoping finance problems can be resolved so that the angels can be spared.

the golden knights parachute team have canceled all performances through september. on tuesday the u.s. supreme court takes on the issue of same-sex marriage. some people are already camping out, outside the court, hoping to witness the two historic legal cases. one involves a berkeley couple fighting proposition 8, the state ban on same-sex marriage. the other case challenges the federal law known as the defense of marriage act. california's attorney general appeared on 0 cnn this morning to talk about the two cases. >> that the same-sex couples that are before the united states supreme court, mrs. windsor, ms. perry, be allowed to have equal protections turned law as any americans. >> perry is a plaintiff in the same-sex marriage case. last month harris filed a friend of the court brief arguing that the sponsors don't have the right to claim they

but today will be one of the warmest days. giving awe look at what we can expect, want to show you the patchy fog there. you can see just along the coastline, just inside the bay. it will begin to burn away. high clouds in the forecast by the afternoon an increase in low clouds will be back along the coastline and could move into the bay for tomorrow morning. so as we get back to work we will begin to notice the transition. a thicker cloud deck. by monday afternoon the first system you see here off the northwest coast is not going to bring us any rain but it is bringing back the on shore breeze. it is bringing back the caller weather and the cloudier weather. by tuesday it's the second system that drops out of the gulf of alaska. this will be a better chance for us to see a few scattered showers. the problem here is it doesn't really look like a whole lot. surely not enough to fill our deficit at this point but it is going to bring back the cooler temperatures in the overnight hours with the cloud cover. we will actually see our 0 overnight lows and our morning temperatures come up. low 40s in the forecast

tuesday, wednesday, thursday. unsettled weather wednesday and thursday with a bigger storm moving in for the weekend. this second system, or third system i guess we could call it, could bring us scattered showers for saturday and sunday. on tuesday night the sacramento city counsel will consider throwing up a last- second shot to keep the kings from leaving town. the city has struck a daily to build a new $448 million downtown arena, and it would be the largest redevelopment project in sacramento history with up to a million and a half square feet of offices housing shops and a hotel. the city would pay $258 million with most of the money coming from the sale of bonds supported by parking revenues. >> that's part of revitalizing our downtown. that's part of completing the rest of k street. that's part of adding additional businesses to old sacramento, the heart of our city. >> the investment group consists of a billionaire, the

we are just learning that a soldier from the bay area has died while serving in afghanistan. sergeant first class james grisham was from hayward. he was transported to a hospital in germany. this morning the department of defense says he he has died from his injuries. the family of the suspected gunman and friends of his victims in the marine barracks shooting are speaking out. the military says the 25-year- old sergeant it shot and killed two fellow marines, then himself. his victims included a woman from oakley. >> i just miss her so much. when i found out about this i couldn't believe it. she had been my best friend

tracking what they believed was stolen vehicle. speeds reached 100 miles per hour. officers chased the driver into san francisco. while they lost him on the ground a helicopter tailed him in the air. the suspect later stopped the car and started running. officers later caught the man. they have not confirmed if he was the suspect they were looking for. four people and a dog are safe after being rescued by the coast guard yesterday afternoon. the coast guard rescue boat couldn't get close to them because of the shallow water so instead everyone on board that stranded boat had to be hoisted into the air by a helicopter and then flown to san carlos. sphaer field police are investigating a tragic accident. they say a seven-year-old boy drowned in a family friend's backyard pool. emergency responders rushed to the home on hall court yesterday morning. police say residents found the boy floating in the pool. paramedics were unable to revive him. a fatal shooting in san leandro claimed the life of a

man who was trying to defend his mother-in-law during a robbery. police say it all began when two thieves approached the woman as she unloaded her car on harbor way on friday night. officers say when the woman's son-in-law came out of the house to help, one of the thieves shot and killed him right in the driveway. a woman who has lived in the neighborhood for 38 years could not believe what had happened. >> to hear what it is that they just shot this person in cold blood and for no reason. it's sad. the crazy world we live in. >> the victim was 33 years old. he lived in alameda. police say the two suspects drove off in a dark sedan. new information about the shootings at a san francisco nightclub we first told you about yesterday. the san francisco entertainment commission has decided to shut down the 330 rich club for the entire weekend. witnesses say an argument broke out just before 1:30 at the establishment. a gunman opened fire both inside and outside of the club.

three people were wounded. two men in their 20s and a man who was in his 30s who remains in the hospital in critical but stable condition. investigators say they are reviewing surveillance footage in hopes of finding clues that could lead them to the gunman. oakland police say new tacts for a crime crackdown are working well. yesterday the mayor and police chief announced that shootings have decreased dramatically. the chief credited a raid three weeks ago where federal agents targeted the east oakland gang called case. they arrested 16 people. he also thanked the community and its clergy. >> one strength that we have is that they understand what it takes to police the city, and they know that we can't do it alone. >> what's really important is that law enforcement is not standing alone. >> reverend george cummings joins the chief in the effort.

sheriff's deputies in santa clara county took more than 600 fire articles off the street. a gun buyback event was held yesterday in san jose. deputies say they collected 584 handguns and 17 assault rifles. they ended up paying people close to 62,000 for those weapons. this was the county's second gun buyback event. new gun control adds from a group of mayors 0 are now airing in some key states. >> i have owned a gun all my life and i'll fight for my right to keep it. background checks have nothing to do with taking guns away from anyone. closing loopholes -- >> it's part of a campaign from new york city mayor michael bloomberg and a group called mayors against guns. the new ads will air in 13 states believed to be divided on gun control. it will not air in california. it is a national day of action for postal service

workers. in 90 minutes a rally will be held at the post office on stockton street in san francisco. it will be one of many rallies held across the country. today's day of action is being held to try to save the six-day service now in place. in december the postal service announced it would stop saturday service by late summer. postal workers say that is not a good idea because they say people depend on their mail and say eliminating a day of delivery will hit small communities and businesses the hardest. the home improvement chain lowe's is accused of discrimination in san francisco. lowe's opened a shore on bayshore boulevard in 2010 but the chronicle is reporting that six current and former employees have filed a lawsuit. they say lee's hired minority employees to comply with a agreement that allowed that store to be built. however, they say the management fired those employees once the store opened. lowe's declined to comment but has insisted that it is in full compliance with city

regulations. the city of san jose is expected to approve adds 7 million incentive for samsung to expand its research operations. the deal is set to go before city council on tuesday. the incentives would allow the company to replace existing offices with the more modern facility. right now the building offers 200,000 square feet of space but the company wants to expand to 680,000 by building two 10- story towers which would employ at least 2,000 people. city college of san francisco says it is going to double its summer class schedule. the college says the boost is meant to help meet the demand for specific classes. more than 980 classes will be offered, the majority being english, math, and science. enrollment management was one area of criticism. the city college received from the commission last summer. a final decision on the school's accreditation is expected to be made in june. big changes coming to uc- san francisco as the school tries to revamp its main campus. the san francisco examiner

in watsonville. a pg&e worker went on bawct truck and helped free the bird. wildlife groups eventually tracked down the bird's owner. denver police are confirming a former colorado inmate is linked to the killing of the state's prison chief. tom clements was shot to death at his home on tuesday. investigators believe 28-year- old evan ebell is connected to the shooting. he was killed in a shoot-out with police in texas last week. officers say the car matches the description of the one spotted outside clement's house the night he was killed. the battle over the mental health care continues. a judge is going to consider whether billions of dollars invested during the past two decades have improved the system. if the judge rules that conditions have improved, control will be returned from the courts to the state. advocates for the prisoners say

let me show what you that looked like. that's when the half marathon started about 9:15 or so this morning. many of those folks will be going on a course that takes them mostly through the downtown area, in and around the downtown area. all told, 9,000 runners will be taking part today in oakland running festival. there are five different events. that includes the full marathon, the half marathon, a 5k and a fun run as well as a relay. participants are coming here from all over the country and all over the world. this is the fourth year of the oakland rung festival. along the route, live bands at various locations, and of course there's great weather on tap today. organizers are expecting big crowds to be cheering on the runners along the way, something that they certainly appreciate. >> i hope to have support

a big change this week for commuters on the golden gate bridge. the bridge will finally switch over to an all electronic toll taking system. for drivers this means four new ways of paying the tolls. the first is fast track. there is also a pay as you go option which requires to you set up an account with your license plate and credit card number. the third option is to make a one-time payment before crossing the bridge. lastly, you can get an invoice mailed to you for the toll amount due. another important reminder for drivers, once the conversion goes into effect, don't stop at the tollbooth since there will be no toll takers there. 28 toll takers will lose their jobs as a result of the switchover. all but nine of those workers have been reassigned to other positions within the bridge district or have chosen to retire. after seven years and more than $400 million, a project designed to help protect san mateo county coastal drivers is almost open to traffic. tomorrow people plan to gather
